Lesson 7: Solve for Unknown Anglesβ€”Transversals
Classwork
Opening Exercise
Use the diagram at the right to determine π‘₯ and 𝑦.
⃑𝐴𝐡 and ⃑𝐢𝐷 are straight lines.
π‘₯=
𝑦=
Name a pair of vertical angles:
Find the measure of βˆ π΅π‘‚πΉ. Justify your calculation.
Discussion
Given line 𝐴𝐡 and line 𝐢𝐷 in a plane (see the diagram below), a third line 𝐸𝐹 is called a transversal if it intersects ⃑𝐴𝐡 at a
single point and intersects ⃑𝐢𝐷 at a single but different point. Line 𝐴𝐡 and line 𝐢𝐷 are parallel if and only if the following
types of angle pairs are congruent or supplementary.

Corresponding angles are equal in measure

Alternate interior angles are equal in measure

Same side interior angles are supplementary

An _________________________________is sometimes useful when solving for unknown angles.
In this figure, we can use the auxiliary line to find the measures of βˆ π‘’ and βˆ π‘“ (how?), then add the two measures
together to find the measure of βˆ π‘Š.
What is the measure of βˆ π‘Š?

Relevant Vocabulary
Alternate Interior Angles: Let line 𝑑 be a transversal to lines 𝑙 and π‘š such that 𝑑 intersects 𝑙 at point 𝑃 and intersects π‘š
at point 𝑄. Let 𝑅 be a point on line 𝑙 and 𝑆 be a point on line π‘š such that the points 𝑅 and 𝑆 lie in opposite half-planes
of 𝑑. Then βˆ π‘…π‘ƒπ‘„ and βˆ π‘ƒπ‘„π‘† are called alternate interior angles of the transversal 𝑑 with respect to line π‘š and line 𝑙.
Corresponding Angles: Let line 𝑑 be a transversal to lines 𝑙 and π‘š. If ∠π‘₯ and βˆ π‘¦ are alternate interior angles, and βˆ π‘¦
and βˆ π‘§ are vertical angles, then ∠π‘₯ and βˆ π‘§ are corresponding angles.
