More fun facts about Astronomy

Astronomy is the oldest science, but
also the newest.

On a clear night without much light
pollution there about 2000 stars visible.
The Cosmic View
The Earth’s diameter is 8,000 miles in
diameter.
 The Earth belongs to the solar system
that has one star, our sun.
 The solar system is more than 9 trillion
miles across.
 It is located in one of the spiral arms of
the Milky Way.

The Milky Way
Contains about 200 billion stars, plus
gas and dust that all revolves around the
center.
 100,000 light years across
 One of billions of galaxies in the
observable universe

 Some are 14 billion light years away.

Cosmology
Cosmology is the study of the origin,
present structure, evolution, and destiny of
the universe.
 Astronomers construct cosmological
models, mathematical descriptions that try
to explain how the universe began, how it
is changing as time goes by, and what will
happen to it in the future.

 These models must be consistent with the
observational data we have on stars and
galaxies.

Homework

What is the difference between a
cosmological explanation of the universe
and a religious explanation of the
universe?
 Explain in a paragraph and towards the
bottom of the page, state where you found
the information.
