
What is Desalination?
 Desalination is the removal of salt from sea
water.

Desalination Plant Uses:
 Cleaning out salt
○ Human Consumption
○ Irrigation
 Water Shortages
○ Population Growth
○ Droughts
○ Limited Available Fresh Water
Cost of the Plants
Israel’s Plant cost 425 million dollars
 Saudi Arabia’s Plant cost $1.6 billion

Who Can and Can’t Afford It?

Iraq
 Economy is not good at the moment, so they can’t
afford it
 However, they have easy access to both the Tigris
and Euphrates

Syria
 Economy is average, considering their population
and GDP
 Could afford it if they were dedicated to the cause

Turkey
 Yes, they are the one of the richest and most
populated countries in the Middle East
 Surrounded by bodies of water
