Ecosystems are self-sustaining















Sunshine is essential for an experimental ecosystem b/c it is the only energy source to sustain
the humans and animal species in the closed system
No gases or organisms could leave or enter the system
Ecosystems need a variety of animals (I)
They needed to have food for 8 and life support for the animals that would provide the food
In an ecosystem everything needed in life recycles
Before long the oxygen dropped from 21% to 14%, A DANGEROUS LEVEL FOR HUMANS
The soil in biosphere 2 was too rich in organic matter , the population of microbes were growing
out of control using all the oxygen
Also an uninvited species known as crazy ants got into biosphere 2 and caused disruption in the
community
Crazy ants are stronger work in colonies and are more advanced than regular ants
The biopsherians made it through the 2-year mission only barely and not without a little help,
they needed oxygen pumped in from the outside
In 1996 the university of Colombia took over research in Biosphere 2
You can never study ecosystems because you always have to account for variable change
If you want to study ecosystems you have to find an ecosystem and put it in a box so you can
control the variables
If the world had more Carbon dioxide we would die because it wouldn’t allow rain which
wouldn’t allow photosynthesis and then we wouldn’t get energy or protein so we would die (I)
W/out phytoplankton or coral reefs life in the ocean is in jeopardy (I)
