CAT-6 Earth Science “To Know” Words
Landform: Physical features on Earth’s surface
Weathering: Breaking bigger rocks in smaller pieces
Erosion: Movement of sediments from one place to another
Deposition: Dropping sediment in a new place
Flood plains: Flat area where river deposits sediment
Dune: Heaps of sand
Glaciers: Thick sheet of ice formed in areas where more snow falls than melts
Valley glacier: Formed in high mountains
Continental glacier: Formed over large areas of land (ex. Greenland and Antarctica)
Mass movement: Downward movement of rock and soil
Mudslide
Sudden movement
Landslide
Sudden movement
Creep
Slow movement
Sinkhole: Large hole made in the ground where limestone gets weathered
Oxbow Lake: Rivers loop as they flow, they follow the shortest route. Cut off loop is an
Oxbow Lake.
Rock: Material made up of one or more minerals
Igneous rocks: Rocks that form when melted rock hardens
Sedimentary rocks: Rocks that form from the layers of sediment as they are squeezed
and stuck together
Metamorphic rocks: Rocks whose form and looks are changed by high heat and great
pressure
Know how to identify common rock forming minerals, including: Quartz, Calcite (streak
test), Feldspar, Mica (hardness), Hornblende
