THEATRE ARTS 101: CRITIQUE ASSIGNMENT
GRADING RUBRIC FOR INSTRUCTORS
Criteria for Assessment:
The excellent critique (has most of the following):
 includes a complete evaluation of each of elements of theatre
 provides specific examples of and details from the live
performance
 arrives at a satisfactory appraisal of the artistic merit based on the
successful application of the elements of theatre
 uses theatrical terminology correctly
 demonstrates college-level writing skill
 includes an introduction/conclusion and a strong thesis statement
 is well-organized
 written in a scholarly tone
 has few grammatical/spelling errors
The adequate critique:
 may not evaluate each of the elements of theatre or may
demonstrate a partial understanding of the application of the
elements
 provides few specific examples and details from the live
performance
 arrives at a mostly satisfactory conclusion in regards to the artistic
merit of the production
 uses theatrical terminology correctly
 demonstrates college-level writing skill
 includes an introduction/conclusion and a strong thesis statement
 may not be well-organized
 may not have a scholarly tone
 may have grammatical/spelling errors
The failing critique (has most of the following):
 does not evaluate the elements of theatre
 does not provide specific examples of and details from the live
performance
 does not arrive at a satisfactory conclusion in regards to the
artistic merit of the production
 does not use theatrical terminology correctly
 demonstrates below college-level writing skill
 is not well-organized
 does not have an adequate introduction/conclusion or thesis
statement
 uses a casual, rather than scholarly tone
 has substantial grammatical/spelling errors
