2c. EXERCISE: Rewrite the following sentences,
using the word(s) given:
UNIT 3 :ELECTRONICS
1. The
development
in
electronics
grew
exponentially after the advent of radio and transistor
technology. (to lead). THE ADVENT OF RADIO AND
TRANSISTOR TECHNOLOGIES LED TO AN

THE
DEVELOPMENT OF ELECTRONICS
2a. COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS
True or False.
Rewrite the FALSE statements so they are TRUE.
1. Linear circuits are improved by using non-linear
devices. T
2. Digital circuits use only digital effects. False. They
are constructed from digital circuits among
others
3. Heat dissipation lengthens the life of appliances.
True
4. Noise is any type of disturbance caused by a
circuit. False . Noise is an unwanted signal.
2. Outputs are actuators or other devices that
transform current or voltage signals back into useful
physical form. Outputs are actuators or other devices
TRANSFORMING CURRENT …
(SHORTENED
RELATIVE CLAUSE)
3. Components
are
generally
in
mutual
electromechanical contact, usually by being soldered
to a printed circuit board (PCB). By SOLDERING
COMPONENTS TO A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD,
THEY ARE IN MUTUAL ELECTROMECHANICAL
CONTACT
2b. LANGUAGE IN USE
1) Find in the text different expressions to introduce
examples. for instance, for example, e.g., such as,
like
2) Give a synonym for the noun “advent” advance
3) Explain what an antenna is. Can you find a
synonym for it? aerial
4) Give another example of an electronic device
with the three types of components and explain
briefly how it works.
5) Give a complete definition of electronic circuit.
6) “Controlling”, “processing” (in paragraph 1) and
“cooling” (in paragraph 9) are verb forms used as
what type of word? Can you give more examples
similar to these ones? nouns
7) Mention any materials that you know which can
be used for soldering components tin (Sn), silver
(Ag)
8) Can you guess the meaning of “discrete levels”
from the text? Not analog
9) Define mixed-circuit with your own words a
circuit comprising both analog and digital
devices
10) What is noise? Any undesired type of wave
(acoustic, electrical, radio frequencies…)
4. Components packaged either singly or in more
or less complex groups are known as integrated
circuits (ICs). ICs is the name GIVEN TO
COMPONENTS… BY WHICH COMPONENTS
PACKAGED EITHER SINGLY OR IN MORE OR
LESS COMPLEX GROUPS ARE KNOWN.
5. Most
analog
electronic
appliances
are
constructed from combinations of a few types of basic
circuits. Most analog electronic appliances ARE
MADE UP OF COMBINATIONS OF A FEW TYPES
OF CIRCUITS…….. (make up)
6. Analog devices normally use a continuous range
of voltage as opposed to the discrete levels used in
digital circuits. Contrarily to THE DISCRETE LEVELS
USED IN DIGITAL CIRCUITS, ANALOG DEVICES
NORMALLY USE A CONTINUOUS RANGE OF
VOLTAGE
3. GRAMMAR AND FUNCTIONS Rhetorical Functions in
Academic Writing: DESCRIBING POSITION
3a. EXERCISES: Complete this description with the words below
TRANSFORMERS
The name transformers is derived from the fact that when two coils are placed in close inductive proximity to
one another the lines of force from one cut across the turns of the other inducing an ac current, energy is
transformed from one winding to another and this is called transformer action.
There are a great variety of transformers for a variety of applications including power transformers, audio
transformers and rf transformers among others. All work on the above principle.
5a. Match the words 1–8 with a word a–h that has a similar meaning.
1g: scarcity-shortage;
5b:measure-degree;
2a: selection-choice;
6d: outside-external;
3e: to intensify-to heighten;
7h: practically-virtually;
4f:lacking-missing;
8c:removable-detachable.
5b. Complete the text with the words below.
power electronics
semiconductor
thyristors
switches
power devices
transistors
Power Semiconductor Devices
The modern age of POWER ELECTRONICS began with the introduction of THYRISTORS in the late 1950s.
Now there are several types of POWER DEVICES available for high-power and high-frequency applications.

The most notable power devices are gate turnoff thyristors (GTOs), power Darlington TRANSISTORS, power
MOSFETs (metal-oxide silicon field-effect transistors), and insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). Power
SEMICONDUCTOR devices are the most important functional elements in all power conversion applications.
The power devices are mainly used as SWITCHES to convert power from one form to another.
