Spelling

pattern

Adding -ible & -able suffixes
-able is far more common than –ible.
-able usually used when you can hear a complete root word before it
e.g. comfortable. It is also used if there is a related word ending in
–ation.
-ible suffix is common when root word cannot be heard e.g. possible.
When adding a suffix beginning with a vowel to a word ending in
‘consonant, e’, the letter ‘e’ is usually removed (e.g. adorable).
If –able ending is added to a word ending in –ce or –ge, the root keeps
the ‘e’ otherwise the ‘c’ and ‘g’ sounds would be hard (as in cup & gap).
When adding –able to a root ending in ‘y’, the ‘y’ changes to an ‘i’ unless
preceded by a vowel (e.g. reliable but enjoyable).
3
Use of hyphen
Hyphens can be
used to join a
prefix to a root
word, especially if
the prefix ends in
a vowel & the
root word begins
in one.
4
‘i’ before ‘e’
except after ‘c’
This rule applies
for words where
the letters ‘i’ and
‘e’ together make
an ‘ee’ sound.
5
Adding suffixes
beginning with a
vowel to roots
ending in –fer
The ‘r’ is doubled
if the
–fer is still
stressed when the
ending is added.
The ‘r’ is not
doubled if the –fer
is no longer
stressed.
