ABOUT YOUR PROBIOTICS
There are significant consequences on human physiology if good gastrointestinal [GI] bacteria are challenged by
pathogenic bacteria and other organisms such as giardia, candida, and parasites. Microbial imbalance is part of
many chronic complaints & diseases including but not limited to irritable bowel syndrome [IBS], Irritable Bowel
Diseases [IBD], autoimmune diseases, fatigue, chronic headaches, and food allergies:






Depletion of vitamin B12 and some amino acids
Short-circuits digestive enzymes
Conversion of essential fatty acids into damaging fats
Increases the potential of GI infection
Encourages GI inflammation and leaky gut toxicities
Interferes with the breakdown of bile acids and estrogens
Probiotics release substances such a lactocidin, lactobicillin & acidolin that are antagonistic to pathogenic [bad] gut
microorganisms. They help break down gluten; help maintain the integrity of the gut lining; compete for adhesion
to hormone receptors; produce vitamins, lactase [to digest milk], and good short chain fatty acids such as butyrate,
propionate & acetate. Healthy bacteria balance is disrupted by daily exposure to chemicals, antibiotics, processed
foods (low in fiber, high in sugar), and stress [emotional or physical] etc. It is said that dysbiosis [the imbalance of
gut microbiotia] occurs within minutes of feeling psycho-emotional stress.
RULES-OF-THUMB ON PROBIOTIC USE:
The beneficial effects are brand, dose and/or species dependent: Use a minimum of 15 to 30 billion colony-forming
units [CFU] daily for maintenance. You may increase slowly to 200-400 billion CFU x 3 to 4 months as tolerated or
as instructed- especially to repopulate the gut after a course of antibiotics. Always consider the quality & quantity of
the probiotic being used, and if they have been exposed to heat. The very high quality products will be
refrigerated, and should be kept refrigerated. Take probiotics WITH food.
By Brand:
 VSL3 400 billion CFU [900 billion CFU by prescription only] of lyophilized lactic acid bacteria: B. breve, B.
longum, B. infantis, L. acidophilus, L. plantarum, L. paracasei, L. bulgaricus, S. thermophilus. Contains maltose
from corn to which some people may be sensitive [Amazon].
 Biotic Defense 400 billion CFU [glutenfreesociety.com]. Does not contain maltose and is an alternative to
VSL3. Especially designed for leaky gut syndrome [LGS].
 BioDoph-7 Plus 20 billion CFU. A balanced blend of 7 strains of probioics + prebiotics for viability [33.88
Biotics].
 TheraBiotics
 Go Live – a balanced blend of probiotics for general maintenance and to heal the gut lining [purchase at
Natural Food Grocers]
 Raw Sauerkraut. Cabbage is naturally populated with probiotics. Sauerkraut is a great economical alternative
to higher dose of a non-specific probiotic supplement [which can be expensive]. There are more CFU in 1 Tsp of
the juice than there is in a dose of an average supplement. It must be “RAW” cultured, homemade; or a gently
cooked very ripe garden-fresh cabbage. Bubbie’s is a commercial raw sauerkraut brand.
 ImmunoSynbiotics from Nutrispec (http://www.nutri-spec.net/)
By Species:
 Lactobacillu. acidophilus NCFM & Bifidobacter ssp. In most common products. Produce folic acid, niacin,
thiamin, riboflavin, pyridoxine, biotin, K.
 B lactis/ infantalis [Bi-o7, HN019 strain] makes prolyndopeptidedase that chews up gliadin [in grains] so it is
not longer recognized as an allergen.
 Saccharomyces boullardi a yeast that reduces accumulation of histamines & histamine allergic reactions
[Jarrow 26.48, NOW brand]
 Bacillus clausii as a sole treatment normalizes the breath test in 47% of people with small intestines bacteria
overgrowth [SIBO]. BLOAT, constipation/diarrhea.
 L. casei, L. plantarum, Streptococcus faecalis, B. brevis -> 82% clinical improvement in SIBO. BLOAT,
constipation/diarrhea (Bioflora).
 L. rhamnosus for Celiac disease
 L. johnsonii in probiotic yogurt x 4 weeks, normalizes cytokine response which reduces the low-grade chronic
inflammation of SIBO. BLOAT, constipation/diarrhea.
 Faecalibacterium & Butyricicoccus pullicaecorum. These are high butyric-acid producing strains of
clostridium cluster IV & XIVa that are found to be highly successful in decreasing inflammation & necrosis, and
Butyricicoccus pullicaecorum was superior in decreasing lesions in those with irritable bowel diseases such as
Colitis, and Chron’s.
 ThreeLac- blend of 3 species shown to benefit austistic spectrum disorders.
 Soluble Fiber & Fructo-polysacchardies [starch, pectin, rutin etc.] -> food for good bacteria that release
acetate, proprionate & butyrate which are essential for repairing gut lining. CAUTION: in those with SIBO this
addition to a probiotic may cause one to feel worse with gas and bloat etc.
Candida Dysbiosis:
Probiotics assist recovery only if the Candida overgrowth is limited to the intestines. If there is a systemic Candida
problem an extensive and more aggressive approach is required. Candida is systemic if there is D-Arabinitol
organic acid elevation on an Organic Acid Test/OAT [urine test]. See Candida Recovery Guide.
 ThreeLac contains 3 strains of beneficial bacteria [Bacillus Coagulans, Bacillus Subtilis, and Enterococcus Faecalis], in a
unique micro-encapsulation process that allows the bacteria to pass through the stomach and into the small intestine.
To be taken at any stage of the Candida diet. After 30 days on ThreeLac, averaging 3 packets daily, 8 of the 9 subjects
showed reduction of Candida antibody levels.” this was an extremely small study, so these results should not be taken as
proof. A higher-dose product may be needed to effectively treat Candida such as Healthy Origins or Prescript-Assist, or
Formula SF722 [see below].
 Formula SF722: 50 mgs--2 gel capsules 3 times daily. Inhibits Candida (contains caprylic & undecenoic acids).
 Mercury Load will make it near impossible to eliminate Candida because yeast binds with mercury. Mercury
toxic load is associated with Low ascorbic acid [vitamin C] in the OAT secondarily to copper toxicity [which is
associated with zinc deficiency].
 Zinc tally test (grade 4= no taste at all) indicates zinc deficiency that may lead to poor immune response and
persistent yeast infection (acne, some white spots on nails, severe dandruff). An alkaline phosphate level below
70 is a functional marker of zinc deficiency. 15mgs of zinc and 1 mg of copper.
