WHERE DOES IT HAPPEN?
The stroma, a fluid filled compartment where sugars are made from
carbon dioxide, that is located in the choroplast.
What Happens?
 The enzyme rubisco combines carbon dioxide with
RuBP, a five-carbon sugar molecule. This process is
called CO2 fixation.
 As this product is an unstable six carbon compound it
breaks down to form two molecules of three carbon
glycerate 3-phosphate (GP).
 GP then can be used to form Amino acids and fatty
acids.

 GP is reduced and phosphorylated to triose phosphate.
ATP and reduced NADP from the light dependent
stage are used in this process. Five out of every six TP’s
are recycled back RuBP using ATP.

How the products can be used
 Two TP molecules will form hexose sugars such as




glucose, which can be further isomerised into fructose.
Sucrose is another product.

Sucrose.
Polymerised hexose sugars can be form carbohydrates
such as cellulose and starch.
Glycerol from TP and fatty acids from GP may combine
to form lipids.
