community -- all of the populations living in the same place at the
same time
consumer -- a living thing that depends on producers for food
decomposer -- an organism that breaks down dead plants and
animals
ecosystem -- a community and its nonliving environment
endangered species -- an organism in danger of becoming extinct
(gone forever)
extinct -- the condition in which there are no more living members
of a species
food chain -- the path of food energy from the sun, to producer, to
consumer
food web -- the flow of energy from the sun through producers,
consumers, and decomposers
habitat -- the place or kind of place in which an animal or plant
naturally lives
herbivore -- an animal that eats only plants
hibernation -- a behavioral adaptation where animals go into a
deep sleep and body systems reduce to
minimal levels
instinct -- a behavior an organism does not have to learn; present
at birth
life cycle -- the stages of growth and change for an organism
metamorphosis -- the changing of certain organisms from one
stage to another during its life cycle
migration -- a behavioral adaptation where there is a seasonal
movement of animals from one place to
another
niche -- the function that an organism performs in the food web of
that community
omnivore -- an animal that eats both plants and animals
Animals and Ecosystems
predator -- an animal that hunts and eats other animals
prey -- an animal hunted and eaten by other animals
population -- all of the organisms of the same kind that are living
in the same area at the same time
producer -- a living organism that uses sunlight to make sugar
structural adaptation -- a physical attribute that helps organisms
meet a life need (A chameleon changes color to blend into its
surroundings.)
