TTL (Transistor-Transistor-Logic) and CMOS (Complimentary Metal Oxide Semi-Conductor) are the two main families of microchips. In each of the families there are a range of IC’s that perform tasks such as counters/ timers/ comparators/ decoders/ logic and man more. The logic chips include:- AND/ OR/ NOT/ NAND/ NOR/ XOR TTL chips usually start with 74…….. CMOS chips start with 40………. These are arranged in packages of either single/ double/ quad Both TTL and CMOS have advantages and disadvantages in respect to voltage/ output current/ arrangement. Assignment Advice Select some common Logic chips from the TTL and CMOS families Compare the functions of the chips Compare the characteristics of the chips according to:1) Speed / performance 2) Type of Power supplies required 3) Power consumption 4) Naming convention 5) Using in circuits (Input protection, ease of building as a prototype, fault finding, handling and storage Determine which would be more suitable in modern applications References http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/components/74series.htm http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/components/cmos.htm Our Lady & St John Vocational Centre BTEC National Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering 2 NAME HOW WILL THE ASSIGNMENT BE ASSESSED Your report should be presented in an appropriate format in order that it can be read by both your assessor and any others, who may wish to read your work, • The assignment should be either word processed or written on A4 paper • A front cover sheet must be included with the following information, student name, date, unit and assessment number. • Correct use of spelling and grammar. • Clear and legible writing or font/font size. • Page numbers. • Clear indication of the tasks being completed. • Appropriate text and web based sources should be used to research your assignment. Your work must be your own. Any websites or books used to obtain information must be referenced in a bibliography at the end of your assignment. It is important that your assignment is handed in on or before the ‘hand in date’ stated on the front cover sheet. Late assignments will only be assessed if the reasons for the lateness have been discussed with both yourself and the assessor. Any work handed in after the hand in date without prior agreement with the assessor will not be assessed. Our Lady & St John Vocational Centre BTEC National Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering 3
