3. Create a concept map using the following 12 ideas:

Conservation Biology
Species biodiversity
Genetic biodiversity
Ecosystem biodiversity
Ecosystem services that benefit people
Habitat Fragmentation
Invasive species
Overexploit
Population Growth
Island biogeography
HIPPO
FIRST. Write the words down on a piece of paper and write their definition
SECOND. Now write the words on the sticky notes
THIRD. Arrange the words so that the concepts connect. Draw lines to connect the concepts and
explain the connection using a verb.
DUE THURSDAY for in Class Discussion HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER
Begin by explaining that you would like their participation in an activity necessary for your class.
Then define for them biodiversity, conservation biology, and any other terms you feel necessary.
Explain why scientists find biodiversity to be important, and give an example of biodiversity.
Read them the quote from E.O. Wilson. It may help to show them your concept map on
biodiversity.

E.O. Wilson states that “Except in pockets of ignorance & malice, there is no longer an ideological war
between conservationists & developers. Both share the perception that health & prosperity decline in a
deteriorating environment.”

(2) Their viewpoint on how what they learned about biodiversity from you and how important
biodiversity is or is not to them,
(3) Address your responses to the quote below by E.O. Wilson, and
(4) How you think society should respond today as the population continues to grow and more
land will be necessary to support people for basic needs such as food and shelter.
