Race against the stopwatch
Outcomes
MA3-1 WM
MA3-2 WM
MA3-3 WM
MA3-5 NA
Describes and represents mathematical situations in a variety of ways using
mathematical terminology and some conventions
Selects and applies appropriate problem solving strategies, including
technological applications, in undertaking investigations
Gives a valid reason for supporting one possible solution over another
Selects and applies appropriate strategies for addition and subtraction with
counting numbers of any size
Resources



A flat surface that is 20 metres long
Tape measure to measure the length required
Class set of stopwatches
10 markers
Worksheet



Divide the class into pairs
Use markers to indicate where the students will run to
Students complete the ‘Estimated amount of time’ column of the worksheet. They
estimate how long they think it will take them to complete the required activity for the
required length
E.g. how long they think it will take to run 20 metres.
‘Partner 1’ records ‘Partner 2’s results whilst ‘Partner 2’ is completing the activities
As each student completes an activity, they need to record their time result they
received on the worksheet
Switch roles
Students can complete the activities in any order
When the students have completed all the activities, they work out the difference
between the ‘Estimated amount of time’ to the ‘Actual time taken’ for each activity
Students then complete addition problem for the ‘Total estimated amount of time’ as
well as the ‘Total amount of actual time’
Students then subtract the two amounts.
Extension


Allow students to compare results with other students and work out the speed and time
of completing the activity for 100 metres/1km
Construct appropriate graphs
