Aberdeen School District World History Course Syllabus Course Title Course Title: World History Course Outline Course Outline: This class will examine; The Emergence of Civilization (3,700,000-1200 B.C.), The First Civilizations (6000-587 B.C.), Ancient Indian Civilizations (2500 B.C. – A.D. 550), Ancient Chinese Civilization (1500 B.C. 589 A.D.), The Greek City States (2000-404 B.C.), Greece’s Golden Ages (478146 B.C.), The Roman World (1000 B.C. – 476 A.D.), Africa (1800 B.C. – 1500 A.D.), The Americas (1800 B.C. – 1500 A.D.), They Byzantine Empire and Russia (395-1589), The Islamic World (570-1250), The Civilizations of East Asia (552-1573), The Rise of the Middle Ages (432-1328), The High Middle Ages (1000-1-500), The Renaissance and Reformation (1350-1700), Exploration and Expansion (1400-1800), Asia in Transition (1368-1868), and The Modern World (1500- Present). Students will complete a variety of assessments and activities matching all ability levels. Text/Resources Text/Resources: “Ancient World History: The Human Journey”, Holt, (2003). Instructional Philosophy Instructional Philosophy: I teach to the theory of student learning styles. In each of my lessons I attempt to place visual, auditory, and kinesthetic elements to reach a diverse classroom. Students will complete crossword puzzles, word searches, poster presentations, jeopardy competitions, skits, and role plays. It is my belief that learning should be fun and engaging. I Materials Needed Course Standards Projects/Major Assignments: Grading 3 Ring Binder with Dividers Notebook Paper Surface RT Pens, Pencils (Something to write with) Textbook Course Standards: The students will learn how to: RH.9.1 Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources, using date and origin of information. WHST.9-10.1 Write arguments focused on discipline specific content. WHST .9-10.1 Write routinely over extended time frames and shorter time frames for discipline specific purposes. -These are some of the standards that students must achieve, determined by the state of Washington. Additional standards that must be achieved can be viewed at https://www.k12.wa.us/corestandards/ . Projects/Major Assignments: Map Assessments- Identify geographic locations in the world. Poster Projects- Presentation to the class on current topic with group. Group Review Sessions- Group Study for assessments Grading: 30% Test/Quizzes 50% Classwork 15% Projects 5% Participation GRADING SCALE: A : 100-93 B+:89-88 A-: 92-90 B : 87-83 B-: 82-80 Attendance C+: 79-78 C : 77-73 C-: 72-70 D+:69-68 D : 67-60 F : 59-0 Attendance Policy: Students are responsible for attending all classes (with the exception of an absence excused by the school) and actively engaging the day’s lesson. Student attendance is crucial to his/her demonstration of proficiency in this subject. Students with unexcused absences will not have the option of making up work from class. Ten-Day Absence Rule: If a student misses more than (10) class sessions during a semester, he/she may be subject to loss of credit in that class. This... Classroom Policies & Procedures: I am extremely excited to be your world history teacher this semester. In order for the classroom to run smoothly and for you to achieve success within this class, I ask that you display the following characteristics at all times: EFFORT—Provide a great work ethic during class and at home with your homework. COMMUNICATION—it is essential that we share a clear line of communication at all times. Be willing to share your ideas!!! INDEPENDENCE—throughout our independent activities, strives to display what you have learned. Don’t be afraid to fail, we learn more from our failures than our successes. PREPARATION—Come to class prepared and ready to learn each and every day. MUTUAL RESPECT— I will not be a drill sergeant in the classroom. I promote a classroom built on mutual respect. I respect each student in the classroom just as they respect the teacher. Students’ will not interrupt the teacher or other students’ while they are sharing their thoughts on the material being covered. This standard is aimed at building professionalism. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY— Cheating will not be tolerated in this class. Students are expected to complete their work on their own. I have a two- step policy. First offense- students will receive a zero on the assignment. Second offense- students’ will receive a zero on the assignment and will be required to attend a meeting with administrators and parents and/or guardians. MR. MARTIN’S NUMBER ONE RULE! — Students’ will provide their full attention during instructional time. This includes but is not limited to: lectures, discussions, tests, or dictations. In other words, when Mr. Martin is talking, you are not! ABSENCES If you do have to be gone for an excused absence, get your assignments from Mr. Martin ahead of time and be prepared for class the day you get back. This includes test days!!! If you leave school early for an excused absence (including extracurricular activities) it is your responsibility to get your assignments to me before you leave. After you have returned from an excused absence (sickness), you have the same number of days that you were absent to complete the assignments and turn it in for credit, according to school policy. Contact Mr. Martin about making up tests and quizzes, as well as arranging an appropriate time. FOOD & BEVERAGE—will be permitted throughout the semester on a no-tolerance policy relating to “left behind garbage.” This policy will remain until it is abused. In which case no food or beverage will be allowed. Headphones-Students’ will be permitted to bring headphones to class but may only use them during appropriate times determined by Mr. Martin. If headphones are seen outside of this time, all privileges for that student will be lost for the entire semester. CELLULAR PHONES—School policy will be applied, no phones. If a cellular phone is seen or heard, it will be taken and given to the administration. Please read these policies with your parents and make sure that you understand them.
