I.
Pharmacology and actions:
A.
Amyl nitrite is an organic nitrite which acts as a potent vasodilator.
II.
Prehospital Indications
A.
Amyl nitrite is used in the treatment of cyanide exposures.
III.
Precautions
A.
Establish an IV as hypotension may develop.
B.
The patient should be placed in the supine position as hypotension may develop.
C.
The vapors are highly flammable.
D.
The drug has a very pungent odor.
E.
The paramedic should take care not to inhale the vapors.
IV.
Administration Guidelines
A.
Post-Medical Control Contact
1.
Adult and Pediatrics: Break the vaporole and have the patient inhale the fumes for
30 seconds out of every 60 seconds. Have the patient breathe 100% oxygen for
the remaining 30 seconds of each minute.
V.
Side Effects and Special Notes
A.
Nausea and vomiting may occur so be prepared to protect the patient's airway.
B.
Headache, visual disturbances, drowsiness and hypotension have been reported.
