The Miracle of Science with Soul
City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center
Amy Cook, Ph.D.
Our Mission
City of Hope is transforming the future of health. Every day
we turn science into practical benefit. We turn hope into
reality. We accomplish this through exquisite care,
innovative research, and vital education focused on
eliminating cancer and diabetes.
Designations
One of 45 National Cancer Institutedesignated Comprehensive Cancer
Center
Founding member of the National
Comprehensive Cancer Network, an
alliance of top cancer centers that sets
national standards for cancer care
Ranked one of the nation’s top cancer
hospitals by U.S. News & World Report
for 11 years
City of Hope’s Leadership in Cancer Care
City of Hope is a leader in patient care in California:
Hematology - Highest number of patients treated
Prostate cancer – Highest number of patients treated
Breast cancer – Second highest number of patients treated
Irell & Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences
Established in 1994
Beckman Research Institute
Cancer Research Institute Dedicated in 1952
First of only five Beckman Research Institutes in the U.S.
dedicated in 1983
Cancer Drug Development:
Improving treatment through science
• Unique “bench to bedside”
continuum of care, from
concept to cure
• City of Hope has a long history
of breakthroughs in the areas
of recombinant DNA
technology, gene therapy and
monoclonal antibodies have led
to many leading “smart” drugs:
– Avastin
– Herceptin
– Rituxin
– Erbitux
Clinical Trials
• In the U.S., about 5% of cancer patients are on a clinical trial. At
City of Hope nearly 1/3 of our eligible patients are enrolled.
• We have over 300 open clinical trials ongoing.
• The Center for Biomedicine & Genetics opens, enabling City of
Hope to create biologically based treatments for use in clinical trials
in 3 FDA approved manufacturing facilities.
• Move multiple cutting-edge technologies into clinical patient studies
more quickly while maintaining the high level of quality control
required by the Federal Food and Drug Administration.
Innovations: Harnessing the immune response as
novel cancer therapy
Why the immune system matters in cancer
• Immune system scours your body
for foreign objects like bacteria
and viruses
• Cancer is your own body’s cells
so it does not see it as foreign, so
will not kill the cells.
• Immune suppression reduces
efficacy of chemotherapy and can
lead to relapse
• How can we support the immune
system and train it to fight
cancer?
Dramatic Advances in Breast Cancer Treatment
Precision medicine, improved screening, refined
surgical techniques, better understanding of subtypes
Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Ovarian Cancer
• Delivering chemotherapy directly to
the abdomen in women with
advanced ovarian cancer is part of
an effective treatment regimen that’s
too little used.
• The technique, known as
intraperitoneal, or IP, chemotherapy,
has been linked to extended survival
when delivered with traditional
intravenous, or IV, chemotherapy.
• City of Hope experts are well-versed
in the regimen and offer IP
chemotherapy to appropriate
patients.
Cancer Screening and Prevention
• Key indicators of genetic risk:
• Cancer occurs at a much
younger age than average
• Cancer occurs in several close
relatives
• More than one type of cancer
occurs in the same close relative
• Cancer occurs in paired organs
(i.e. cancer in both breasts)
• Cancer occurs in more than one
generation
• Several rare cancers occur in a
family
Risky Behaviors – Cancer Culprits
Not all factors have the same
impact on cancer risk and can
vary by age, gender, race etc.
California Teachers Study
• In 2005, 133,000
teachers in CA were
asked to fill out a 16
page health survey
California Teachers Study
All women in CA
CA Teachers Study Participants
Increase in Breast, Colon, Endometrial,
Lymphoma, Melanoma etc.
Concluded obesity tied to diabetes
What can we do? How can we be proactive?
The Power of Superfoods
• Pomegranates,
blueberries,
mushrooms, cinnamon,
grape seed extract are
all being studied for
their anti-cancer
properties
• Vitamins
• Anti-oxidants
• Food can be healing
Improving your nutritional habits
• Eat a Rainbow! Lots of different color fruits and
veggies, dark green vegetables are especially
nutrient dense.
• Eat seafood in place of meat two times a week.
Fatty fish like salmon and trout are high in omega
3 fatty acids.
• Avoid refined sugars
• Add fiber to your diet
• Drink green tea
Exercise as preventative medicine
• Moderate to high-intensity bone-strengthening exercises
two or more days a week.
• Even a few hours of exercise a week can lower your risk
of cancer.
• Take the stairs, take the dog for a walk, get a fitbit to
compete with friends
Happiness and Health
• Those who demonstrate happiness as a predominant
mood show…
– Lower risk of heart disease
– Lower blood pressure
– Healthier body weight
– Being less impacted by everyday stressors
– Stronger ability to deflect stress
