North Carolina State University Office of Institutional Research and Planning OPENING: Data Analyst Primary Function of Organizational Unit The Office of Institutional Research and Planning, at NC State University, is responsible for producing campuslevel information and analysis in support of institutional planning, resource allocation and assessment processes, and to comply with federal, regional and state reporting requirements. Key functions include decision support for strategic planning, campus policy formation, and program evaluation; coordination of self-studies and SACS accreditation; collecting and reporting on student ratings of instruction (ClassEval); and conducting surveys of students, faculty and staff. Primary Purpose of Position The incumbent of this position will be provide sophisticated data mining, database exploration, file handling and data collection, and information display. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to understand issues in higher education, identify problems and opportunities, and determine the appropriate data needed to inform/solve the problem. A passion for utilizing data to solve real problems like enrollment planning, strategic resource management and institutional data quality, is key to success in this position. Successful candidates have strong statistical skills including modeling and forecasting; perform analysis including the evaluation, interpretation of results and forecasting future trends. In addition, communication skills are essential in order to present interpretation of analysis results and communicate the implications of those results to decision-makers. Key skills valuable to this role include a variety of statistical software (e.g., SPSS, SAS (preferred), STATA, MATLAB) and experience with and knowledge of large, complex student systems. Knowledge of relational databases (e.g., Oracle, Access) is also a plus. Minimum Experience/Education Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Prefer Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree in a data driven field such as Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Analytics, etc. Department Required Skills Solid innovative analytical and problem-solving skills Strong initiative and commitment to achieving results.
