Identifying Equal or Unequal
Number Sequences
An equation is a number sentence that says both sides of the = sign are equal
or the same.
For example, 6 1 3 5 9 is an equation because both sides are equal.
An inequality is a number sentence that says two sides are not equal.
For example, 7 1 3  9 and 5 1 3  9.
To find which symbol to use to compare the expressions, add or subtract on
each side.

Sometimes you will need to find an unknown number. For an equation, there will be
one correct answer. For an inequality, there will be a set of numbers.
