When you’re finished, answer the questions at the end of the lesson.
1. The Book of Revelation is for the church
[Read: Rev. 1:1 – “to shew unto his servants”]
2. It can be understood
a) Much of it can be understood now - but, God reserves the rest to Himself
b) He will reveal things, and events, as we live through them – and see them
happen
3. It tells of things that have happened, are happening now, and will happen
[Read: Rev. 1:19 – “Write the things which thou hast seen…”]
4. The Primary focus, however, is the Last Years leading up to the Lord’s return
a) It is the story of the final struggle between the church and the evil of the
world
b) It contains information, instruction, and direction for us
[Read: Rev. 1:3 – “read – hear – and keep”]
Symbolism
1. The Revelation is full of symbolism
2. Don’t let it scare you off
3. The symbolism can really help us understand it better; and, deepen the
meaning for us
4. Two basic types of symbolism in the Revelation: word pictures & numbers
5. Word pictures
a) Riders on horses
(Rev. 6)
b) Stars falling from heaven
(Rev. 8)
c) Precious stones and jewels
(Rev. 4 & 17)
d) Different kinds of “beasts”
1) “Beasts” around the throne of God
(Rev. 4:7-8)
2) A Beast with 7 heads and 10 horns
(Rev. 13 & 17)
3) And, a woman in fancy clothes and jewels that sits on the beast with 7
heads and 10 horns
(Rev. 17:3)
6. Numbers (examples)
[Download and study handout: Numbers in the Bible]
a) The number two indicates support, or confirmation (under Jewish law, it
took at least two witnesses to confirm a truth; and convict of a crime)
b) Three is the number of a complete and ordered whole (a spiritual whole
like the three manifestations of God: Father, Son and Holy Ghost)
c) Seven is the number of completion, or perfection

Framework
1. There are different ways of looking at the Book of Revelation
2. Most people look at the main body of the book (Ch. 6-22) as if it is
chronological – i.e. chapters follow each other in a time sequence
3. I believe it is not chronological in the usual sense of the word
4. I see the main body of the book as a series of seven visions folded into one,
each with its own story to tell
a) Each vision begins at some point in time (depending on what the vision is
about)
b) And they all end with the return of the Lord – or an event that heralds the
return of the Lord
5. These lessons will be presented with that framework in mind
Questions
1. According to Revelation 1:1, who is the Book of Revelation addressed to?
