Lamp Features and Specifications
Lamp Life – Average lifetime (usually in
hours) of the lamp
 Wattage – Electrical Power that the
Lamp consumes (Unit: Watts - duh!)
 Voltage – Rated Voltage to be used at.
Usually incandescent/halogen lamps can
run on either AC or DC. Do NOT Exceed
the rated voltage.


Beam Spread – The angle of coverage
that most of the light is focused in.

Base Types

Different Lamps use different types of
bases. It is important to know which one
you want.
The “Medium” base is the most common, used in most residential
Incandescent fixtures.

Types of Lamps:

Type A – “Standard” type of lamp, used
in most desk lamps, general purpose
residential lighting.


PAR Type – Parabolic Aluminized
Reflector, Reflecting/optical mechanisms
are contained within the lamp. Often
used for outdoor security lights.

R Type – “Reflector” lamp, typically used
in Track lighting. More directional than
“A” lamp but not as directional as PAR
lamp.

Types of Lamps:

MR 16 – A “contemporary” lamp used in
decorative track lighting. Note this is a 12V
lamp and CANNOT be used on 120V Systems
directly. These are usually available in very
directional models.

Fusing the Dimmer
It is important to fuse the dimmer to
protect against overloads and short
circuits.
 To properly size the fuse, you need to
know the power rating of the dimmer.
Then use P = V x I to calculate the fuse
amperage.
600W/120V = 5A

