5th Grade Science Project
A System Advertisement:
Body Systems Flap Book Project
Overview: Our fifth graders have been learning about the systems of the body in science class.
Each small group of students will create an “advertisement” about their assigned body system.
The flap-book poster will serve as an advertisement inviting observers to come and tour their
system. The final project will be displayed in the hall to educate other students about the
importance of all body systems and how they work together.
Preparation: A limited amount of time for research will be provided during science. I have
scheduled 3 visits to the computer lab for research. Students should begin researching their body
systems at home with parental guidance. However, a great deal of class time will be provided
for students to work with their partners to assemble and create their projects. The poster boards
and construction paper will need to be provided by one member of each group, with all group
members putting in a couple of dollars to cover the cost of the poster board. Students will also
need to provide their own embellishments and materials to create a creative poster (ex: glitter,
fabric, pipe cleaners, felt, materials such as styrofoam to make models). Students will be
informed in advance about the days they will be working in groups so they can come prepared to
class that day.
Background Information: Your team of two or three at the Body Systems Dynamics Ad Agency
has been hired as a travel consultant to design a luxury tour through the Human Body. Before
you can collect your fee (payment) from the Anatomy Travel Bureau, you must produce a
detailed advertisement. The owner of the travel bureau, Mrs. Sinclair Esophagus, has informed
you that in order to win the contract you must highlight the important spots of your system, the
exciting activities (how it works, what it does), and the imports and exports of the areas (what
other systems it works very closely with). Each group will create one of the following
advertisements: Digestive, Respiratory, Skeletal, Muscle, Nervous, Excretory, Circulatory,
Endocrine, and Integumentary (skin).
What is a flap book poster? A large poster with numerous pop-ups, lift-the-flaps, and foldouts. Each of these items presents a different category of information with additional, more
detailed information inside the flaps, fold-outs, etc…For example, the “lift the flap” portion
might showcase interesting and unusual facts, the fold out may showcase drawings of the organs.
Pop-ups may advertise some of the organ labels or danger zones (such as the stomach and its
digestive acids).
You may use drawings, computer graphics, photographs of actual organs, student-created
models, pictures from magazines, journals, or books to help in your advertisement of each
system. Whenever possible, type all written parts of your labels and information. Let your
imagination run WILD!
Each group will orally present its advertisement to the class, and we will vote on which team gets
the contract.
What should I include in my project?
These will be the different categories found in your project.
The following questions should be answered in your advertisement. The first question is
the title of your system. Each of the subsequent questions should be presented in a
separate category. Students will be presented with a model of what is expected of them.
1. What is the name of your body system? The name should be BIG and written clearly. It
should stand out or attract attention to your advertisement.
2. What does your body system do for our bodies? A description of what it does for your
body should be clearly displayed.
3. What main organs make up your body system? What do these organs do and how do
they work together? What do they look like? Example: Display pictures of your organs
and label them with a brief description of what they do for the system. *Remember, you
may use computer graphics, pictures from magazines, or draw them yourself. You may
use a variety of materials with different textures so that an observer may want to touch
your advertisement. Be creative and attract your classmates! You are selling your
system!
4. Discuss at least one problem, such as a common disease, that may affect your body
system. What would happen to your system if the disease took control of your system?
Is there a cure for your system or a way it can be prevented?
5. What other system does my system work very closely with? (ex: circulatory and
respiratory)
6. Where did I find all of my information? You need to include a bibliography. Don’t
forget to mark your favorites and/or record where you found your information.
5th Grade Body Systems Project
~Helpful Information~
There are 9 systems of the human body that we will cover in
this unit. This list is an overview of our body systems. We have
learned that many of our systems work very closely together to
help our body function properly. This is evident as you read
the list and notice that some major organs are found under a
variety of different systems. Amazing!
The Circulatory (Cardiovascular) System includes the heart, the blood, and the blood vessels.
The Integumentary System includes the skin, hair, nails, and sweat glands.
The Digestive System includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas,
small intestine, and the large intestine.
The Endocrine System includes all of the glands in the body. The glands you will focus on the
thyroid, adrenal, and pituitary (the master) glands. The pancreas is the major organ in this
system.
The Excretory System includes the liver, kidneys, ureters, urethra, and bladder.
The Muscular System includes all of the muscles and tendons of the body.
The Nervous System includes the brain, the spinal cord, and all of the nerves of the body.
The Respiratory System includes the nose, the mouth, the trachea, the bronchial tubes, alveoli,
and the lungs.
The Skeletal System includes all of the bones of the body.
Questions for you and your partner(s) to think about as you begin to
conduct research on your body system. You may want to divide
these between group members.
1. What does my system do for our body?
2. What system does my system work very closely with?
3. What are some of the major organs that make up my body system?
4. What is the job of each of these major organs?
5. What does my system look like? Will I draw and label the organs, print graphics from
the computer, cut pictures out of journals, or create a model and label?
6. Are there any illnesses or conditions that can affect my system? (diabetes, heart disease,
stomach ulcers, enlarged thyroid)
7. What are some very interesting/amazing facts that I can include in my project?
8. What materials will I use?
9. How will my group members and I divide the work in our group?
10. Will we make any models of organs to glue on our poster board?
11. Remember, you are advertising your system. What will your slogan be?
12. Where did I get my information?
