iCRAG Postdoctoral Researcher RM1.2PD2 Metallogenesis of Cu deposits in Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks, southern Ireland. Duration: 24 months Salary: €34 000 per annum A two year postdoctoral research position (starting October 2016) in the combined fields of geochemistry and mineralogy will be available for a highly motivated individual in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, at University College Cork, Ireland. Geofluids play a pivotal role in the structural and geochemical evolution of sedimentary and vein- hosted copper deposits. The ubiquitous presence of fluids in such settings can directly influence the distribution of heat, mineral reactions and deformation process from the microscopic to the megascopic scale. This project will address some fundamental questions related to the development of copper in the Copper Coast deposits, the Sediment-hosted Stratiform Copper and vein-hosted deposits in the Variscides of southwest Ireland as well as the southern sector of the Irish Midland orefield. In the effort to define the source of hydrothermal fluids, as well as ore forming components (S, Cu) of southern Ireland copper deposits, cutting edge geochemical tools will be used to determine H, O, S and Cu isotopes and trace element concentration in ore minerals and fluid inclusions. Merging light and heavy isotope data with fluid inclusion microthermometry, ore petrology, and models of MWL/sedimentary sulphur signature will help produce a consistent genetic model for Cu mineralization in southern Ireland. iCRAG, the new Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences, is funded under the SFI Research Centres Programme and is co-funded under the European Regional Development Fund. It is supporting >40 new early career research opportunities. Thus, the candidate will be part of a larger well established research team. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in stable isotope geochemistry with interests in mineralogy and economic geology. Prospective candidates can get additional information by e-mailing Dr. Pat Meere ([email protected]) or Dr. Giulio Solferino ([email protected]). Applications should include an academic CV, a letter of motivation and the names and contact details of two academic referees to be sent to Dr. Meere. The application deadline is the 1st August 2016. The start date of the position will be in early October 2016.
