Instructions to candidates
1. This is a close book exam.
2. Answers are expected to all questions.
3. Answers are to be written in the spaces provided under each question.
1
1. A truck travels 500 m in 45 s while being decelerated at a constant rate of 0.75 m/s2.
Determine (a) its initial velocity, (b) its final velocity, (c) the distance traveled during the
first 5 seconds. (25 points)
2
2. Three children are throwing snowballs at each other. Child A throws a snowball with a
horizontal velocity V0. If the snowball just passes over the head of child B and hits child
C, determine (a) the value of V0, (b) the distance d. (25 points)
3
3. The winch delivers a horizontal towing force F to its cable at A which varies as shown in
the graph determine the speed of the 45-Kg bucket when t = 20 s. Originally the bucket is
moving upward at 𝑉1 = 4 m/s. (25 points)
4
4. The car A with the mass of 1000kg starts to move downwards on the surface with an
initial velocity of 20 ft/s. This car will stops due the friction force of the surface after
reaching to the distance of s. Consider the friction coefficient of µ= 0.75 for the surface.
Calculate s. (25 points)
1ft = 0.3048m
𝑉0 = (20)(0.3048) = 6.096 𝑚⁄𝑠
∑ 𝐹𝑛 = 0 ⇒ 𝑁𝐴 = (1000)(9.81)(cos 10) = 9660.96
𝑓 = 𝜇𝑁𝐴 = (0.75)(9660.96) = 7245.72
𝑇1 + 𝑈1−2 = 𝑇2
1
(1000)(6.096)2 + (1000)(9.81)(𝑠)(sin 10) − (7245.72)(𝑠) = 0
2
𝑠 = 3.35 𝑚
