Physio self-referral
If you think you need physio, you do not need to see your GP if you meet certain
criteria – you are over 18, you have had your condition less than 6 months and
your complaint is a single joint/area. You can fill in the Circle MSK self-referral
form which is on our website and send it direct to the MSK (Musculoskeletal)
service. For more information about Circle MSK visit their website www.circlebedfordshiremsk.co.uk
Sustainability of the Practice
You may be aware from the news that the Government is looking for GP practices to become bigger and
stronger - ideally they want practices to have 30,000 patients. We are currently have around 12,600.
They are also looking for practices to open from 8 until 8, 7 days per week. It is still very difficult to
recruit GPs nationally, and particularly in Bedford. As with many other Bedford surgeries, we would not
be able to meet Government requirements by staying as we are. We have therefore been collaborating
with some
other surgeries in Bedford and have been investigating the possibility of a merger with a larger
organisation based in Northamptonshire. King Street Surgery has decided that is not the solution for us.
We will continue to collaborate with other surgeries and are looking at building stronger ties with more
local surgeries, which we hope will enable to us to meet Government requirements and have a positive
impact on patient experience. We will keep you informed of any developments.
Clinical Prescribing Pharmacist
Did you know we have our own (part time) prescribing Pharmacist? Jackie Smith works Monday,
Wednesday and Friday mornings. If you have a medication query you can speak to Jackie about it. She
can answer most medication queries but if she feels a GP is more appropriate, she will arrange for a GP
to speak with you.
On Line Services – how to avoid telephone queueing
Reminder - If you register for on line access you can view, book and cancel
appointments (thus avoiding being caught up in a queue on the phone),
request repeat medications, change personal details and view your summary
care record. You can book exactly the same appointments as you would if
you called up by telephone. For details of how to do this please go to our home page
(www.kingstreetsurgery.co.uk) and scroll down – on line services is on the right hand side.
Sample jars
The hospital is changing the sample jars to tubes. Whilst your eyes may
widen at the small size of the tubes there are good reasons for this change
which will ultimately lead to a better service to patients.
Currently around 7.5% of samples are rejected because they are under-filled
or the urine is “too old”. The new tubes have a powder which preserves the
urine. This will reduce the number of repeats that are required. At the lab,
the staff have to “decant” the urine from the current jars to the tubes they
will be providing us with and relabel them, as this is the size needed for their equipment. Using the tube
will remove this part of the process and means the sample will be processed more quickly leading to
quicker results.
Dementia Support
Do you have or are you caring for someone with Dementia? The Tibbs Dementia Foundation is a
fantastic local charity that provides support and activities to individuals and family members. These
include day trips, ballroom dancing, afternoon tea, counselling, local walks a drop in centre and many
more. There is a link on our website or you can reach them via www.tibbsdementia.co.uk
Medical Trivia
An individual blood cell takes 60 seconds to do a complete circuit of the body. A red blood cell’s lifespan
is 4 months. It must be exhausted with all those circuits.
