HAPPY NEW YEAR
We hope 2013 has had a great start and we wish each of you great success in all
your activities this year. We look forward to building our best practice sharing
and growing LeIP so that more lymphoma information is at your fingertips.
W ORLD CANCER DAY
February 4th is World Cancer Day. The Union for International Cancer Control
(UICC) has chosen the theme "Cancer-Did You Know?" which focuses on the
myths of cancer and it's misconceptions around the world. UICC has created a
website for World Cancer Day (www.worldcancerday.org) that you can access by
clicking here or on the URL above. There you'll find suggestions about what your
organisation can do to mark the day and how to use their resources in any event
you may already be planning. You can download the logo, a fact sheet, phone
app, posters and their toolkit.
Even the smallest noise is powerful when joined by the rest of the world, so have
a look at the website and see what your organisation can do for this year's World
Cancer Day on February 4th.
CLINICAL TRIALS
The LC website has been updated with some of the latest clinical trial information
for Mantle Cell, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Diffuse Large B Cell and nonHodgkin's lymphomas. Click here to view the listing and to find out more
information about each clinical trial.
RESEARCH
New Drug Combination Prevents Relapse
Researchers from the University of Manchester have shown that a new drug in
unison with radiotherapy is four times more likely to result in long-term survival
for lymphoma patients than just radiotherapy alone. Click here to read the full

BEST PRACTICES
Meeting Vandana Gupta, founder of V Care Foundation, in person is like meeting
a ray of sunshine - warm, bright and comforting. Faced with the many
challenges of the Indian healthcare system, Vandana and her team is still able to
bring information, help and hope to the many cancer patients she encounters on
a daily basis.
V Care Foundation - Mumbai, India
V Care Foundation, a Registered Public Charitable Trust, was founded by
Vandana Gupta, a Hodgkin cancer survivor, in Mumbai on 21st February
1994.The organization provides free service to cancer patients and their families,
to help them cope with the crisis of Cancer.
All the activities are funded through donations from private donors and sponsors.
There is no cost to the patients.
V Care volunteers' work has been recognized and appreciated over the years,
thus the organization is accredited to major hospitals in the city, namely, Tata
Memorial Hospital, Jaslok Hospital, ACTREC, Nanavati Hospital, Breach Candy
Hospital, Leelavati Hospital, and St. Elizabeth Nursing Home. All volunteers work
in purely honorary capacity and no compensation is paid to them.
The objective is to provide services to meet the informational, physical, emotional
& practical needs of patients, throughout the patient journey, from the time of
diagnosis and treatment, as well as caring, survivorship, recovery, palliation or
bereavement. In the year 2012, V Care volunteers interacted with 7500 patients.
V Care provides patients with need-based financial assistance towards their
treatment. This help is provided to all patients, immaterial of their stage of cancer,
and is inclusive of the palliative patients as well. In addition, information and
resources needed by the cancer patients and their families is provided, to assist
in making informed decisions about the treatment and help them through their
cancer experience.

Through seminars, workshops and discussions, V Care strives to spread
awareness about all cancer, focusing on prevention and early detection, and
removal of all myths associated with cancer. A data bank helps to guide patients
about blood banks, donors, living accommodation, travel & charitable trusts for
financial assistance. Telephone help-lines are accessible 24 hours a day, seven
days a week.
There is a toy library for the young patients and their siblings at the Tata
Memorial Hospital and ‘Hamari Pathshala’ and an educational centre for patients
at Gadge Maharaj Dharamshala, which is a place where patients stay. Adults
and children are often taken on picnics, to temples and on city tours, with the
intent of helping them break away, no matter how briefly, from the painful
monotony of hospital rounds.
Cancer Survivors' Day in February is a landmark celebration for V Care, where
rich tributes are paid to the spirit of survivorship, says Vandana. Three
exceptional people, who have shown grit & courage in their battle against cancer,
are awarded trophies & are called VICTORS. Caregivers are not forgotten. Their
efforts are appreciated too. This unique program was initiated in India by V Care
and is now being done in many cities by other support groups. Their stories
provide inspiration and strength to those struggling with treatment she said and
this is very important in the patient journey.
Share-A-Celebration during Diwali, a major Indian festival, is celebrated by
bringing festivities to the bedside of every cancer patient admitted into the
hospital.
Thank you Vandana for sharing your organisation and congratulations on the
excellent work of the V Care Foundation.
