WG 22 Report, November 2008
During the year, Dr. Farman and Mr. Goyette (Co-Chairs of DICOM WG 22 – Dentistry)
also attended various DICOM Working Groups to ensure the smooth passage of DICOM
Supplement 123 – Structured Display. Harry Solomon was instrumental in editing the
document. This supplement required interaction with DICOM WG 11 (Display Function
Standard) and WG 6 (Base Standard). While the origins of the new supplement involved
displaying full mouth radiographic series and similar series on the screen in a
reproducible manner at the sender and recipient ends of a communication, this soon
expanded to involve ophthalmology (DICOM WG 9), digital mammography (DICOM
WG 15), clinical trials and education (DICOM WG 18) and cardiology (WG 1) among
other disciplines. This Supplement passed through public comment, was readied for letter
ballot at a DICOM WG 6 meeting attended by the ADA DICOM Alternate, Dr. Greg
Zeller, It received approval through letter and was approved by DICOM WG 6. Final text
will is anticipated before the end of 2008.
As a Member of DICOM WG 24 (Surgery), Dr. Farman has been keeping an eye on three
supplements originating from that group that affect Dentistry in that they affect all boneintegrated implants (orthopedic and dental). These are Draft Supplement 131 (Implant
Templates), Draft Supplement 132 (Polygonal Segmentation Storage SOP Class) and
Draft Supplement 134 (Implantation Plan SR Document). It is necessary for WG 22 to
recruit more software vendors involved in dental implant planning to the task of ensuring
the new Supplements when approved do adequately support the needs of Dentistry.
Through ADA SCDI WG 12.1, that is used to interpret DICOM for dentists and to
provide demonstrations, Technical Reports that are in advanced stages of development
include ADA SCDI TR 1051 concerning DICOM use in larger dental clinics and
institutions (public comment completed and now readied for letter ballot by ADA SCDI),
ADA SCDI TR 1057 – guidelines for digital imaging and interoperability in dental
practice (readied for public comment through ADA), and ADA SCDI TR 1059 –
standardization in cephalometrics ( draft completed and approved by ADA SCDI WG
12.1 and awaiting further input from ADA SCDI WG 11.6 – orthodontic record – prior to
forwarding for public comment).
At the ADA Annual Session, the DICOM efforts at ADA SCDI were demonstrated by
multiple users and vendors at a three booth wide “Interoperability” activity linked by a
DICOM server (provided by Medicor/Lead Tools) to six active cone beam CT systems in
the “Live Operatory” educational program. This interoperability activity continued
throughout the three whole days of commercial exhibition. The concept of DICOM is
also being addressed individually by DICOM WG 22 members through their roles as
editors and authors. Support for SCDI activities has been made in an article and letter to
the editor published in JADA in 2008 and also through other outlets including the widely
accessed blog “Talking Pictures” in the DrBicuspid.com web page. A special session on
DICOM and IHE was held at the Asian Congress on Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in
Nara, Japan in November 2008. DICOM was also discussed as part of a workshop on
digital imaging delivered at the International Dental Federation (FDI) in Stockholm,
September 2008.
