Block: 1
Part: 3
Learning outcome
How far achieved?
Examples of TU100 activities?
How to progress?
Describe the client-server model of
the Web.
Section 1 has introduced the basic
concept of client-server model.
I do not feel confident with the
details of the model and I believe
this will be explained in more detail
in the material.
Describe the components of a URL.
I have learn the 3 parts that make up
a URL.
The parts that make up a URL will
be explained in detail later in the
material.
Describe the concept of markup and
its role in styling documents.
Most of the activities in this section
has aided in my understanding of
markup and how it is used within
documents.
Continue to work through this part
and gain further experience using
HTML.
Describe HTML and explain how a
browser processes HTML tags.
Although I understand that the
browser processes HTML I do not
have a technical understand of this
parsing.
I will continue to work through the
material.
Skills
Knowledge and understanding
ICT Skills.
Describe what is meant by hypertext
and explain how hyperlinks work,
both within and between documents.
Hypertext is the concepts of moving
from one part of the web to another
whether or not that is on the same
page to get to the information you
seek.
I feel confident in creating
hyperlinks and will continue to do so
working through the material.
Understand how images are dealt
with and rendered in HTML.
I understand that when the browser
processes an image tag it sends
another request of to the server to
download the image.
Keep working through the material
and using attributes to control the
tags further.
Explain the role of stylesheets in
specifying the appearance of HTML
pages.
Stylesheets are used to separate the
contend from the page design to
simplify maintenance.
The sections so far only briefly
covered CSS and did not provide
any activities to produce a styled
document, I believe this will be in a
later section.
Distinguish between different kinds
of HTML editor.
The activities in this section has
allowed me to use both a
WYSIWYG editor and directly type
markup into a document.
I believe the rest of this section will
continue to build on the foundations
of HTML and CSS.
Use the HTML tags described in this
part to create a very simple web
page.
Activities 9, 10, 17, 21 and 22 as
provided me instructions on directly
typing HTML tags into the
document.
Other sections of part 3 will continue
to build on this foundation.
Describe the limitations of HTML.
HTML only describes how
documents should appear and
nothing about the content within the
I understand that XML was created
to describe the content of a
document but I don't know if the

material will cover this topic any
further.
Understand how presentation of web
pages can be separated from content
through the use of XML and
stylesheets.
I understand the reasoning to keep
the presentation and description of
the content separate.
I hope this will be covered in more
detail.
Describe the features of XML.
XML allows you to share data with
someone else or another computer
and provide a set of rules to interpret
the content.
I assume that the material will cover
XML in more detail as only the
concept was described.
Explain the role and structure of
RSS feeds.
RSS feeds provide a way easy way
to receive updated content from your
favourite websites.
I am feeling confident in RSS feeds
and XML markup in general.
Explain the role of a news reader.
A news reader is a system which
N/A
allows you to pull all your RSS feeds
into one place, saving you time.
Key skills
Develop skills in taking notes.
I have been using FreeMind to take
notes to complete TMA01.
I will continue to take notes through
the course of TU100.
Evaluate the quality of information
found on the web.
I have learnt how to evaluate the
quality of information on the web by
using the PROMPT criteria.
I am sure PROMPT will come in
useful when finding references for
TMA's.
Keep a learning journal.
I have kept a learning learning in
the form of a blog on the OU
website.
I'll continue to create a blog during
my studies as it helps me reflect.
Practical and professional skills
Use a news reader.
I have used a application on my
phone called feedly and google
reader.
N/A
Use an HTML editor to create a very
simple web page.
I have used Google Sites simple
HTML editor to get a basic
understanding of how HTML is
generated. Activities 2, 18, 19 and
20 have been useful in getting to
understand the editor.
I will continue to play around and
develop my website further.
