Patterns of Species Diversity
alpha, beta, gamma
The biodiversity of planet Earth is the total variability of life
forms. Currently about 1.9 million species are known, but this
is thought to be a significant underestimate of the total
number of species. The actual number may be as high as 50
million or more.

Latitudinal Diversity Gradients
The species richness of samples of vegetation from
South Africa shows a classic humped-back
relationship with ecosystem productivity as
inferred from amount of biomass per unit area.

Perturbation and change in coral reef communities
(Acropora cervicornis/spatial analysis/Dry Tortugas/temperature effects)
ABSTRACT Ninety-six percent of surveyed shallow-water
Dry Tortugas reef corals died during the severe winter of 19761977. Data from skeletal stains indicate that death occurred
during the mid-January intrusion of 14 degree C water onto the reef.
