DEVELOPMENT THROUGH DRAMA...
Encouraging self-reflection and the transformation of individuals through theatre-induced learning
“All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts.”
William Shakespeare
“Any training related to interacting with others lends itself well to drama.”
Mary Pierson
“Business has much to learn from the arts.”
Schumpeter
Today’s working environment calls for learning and development programmes that engage more than a person’s intellect and technical knowledge. They must be practical, enabling participants to actively transfer their learning to their work, and also relevant to the complexities of
work-life realities. Most importantly, they must provide a memorable, fun, and lasting experience.
Drama is fluid, spontaneous, and limitless, making it the ideal medium to effectively facilitate learning. It mirrors the human dynamics that
influence decisions made in boardrooms, on manufacturing floors, and in client-centric service environments.
P5+ has partnered with Masquerade to initiate customised Development Programmes that aim to facilitate learning, reflecting specific job and
organisation contexts. This ensures transference of skills from the theatre community to the business community in order to help unlock our
clients’ potential and enhance personal development in an enjoyable and psychologically safe manner.
Why Use Drama as a Medium for Learning?
1. It provides an “enacted” experience that may contribute to creating, reinforcing or complementing different forms of learning experiences that
might otherwise be out of reach of the participant.
2. It is a creative process that focuses on the present. It transforms one thing into another, i.e. a problem into an insight, a habit into a new set of
behaviours, a plan into a corporate action. 3. It brings theory to life, allowing for the validation of abstract concepts through personal reflection. It is not just information based but more
participative, engaging and non-threatening.
4. It helps in overcoming the limitations of classroom participation. It is an immediate and engaging way to facilitate learning. Thus, it can have a
much greater impact than some of the more traditional methods of learning used today.
Our Model of Learning
P5+ understands what you need and how best to get that across and involve ourselves in the preparation, design and objective-setting process.
Our learning and development programmes are created to meet an organisation’s specific objectives.
Our model of learning encapsulates a series of approaches and therefore we do not tie ourselves to one specifically. However, we are guided by
principles that people learn best through critical reflection, managing real-life concerns and adopting a within-to-outside approach. We also
believe that learning should occur in non-threatening and comfortable environments which allow participants to generate insights they can
commit to.
In view of this we use a blend of approaches organised in a systematic manner. The approaches are:
• Test-based development assessments (support insight and contribute towards motivation)
• Simulation-based development assessments (support insight and motivation, and contribute towards skill development and real-world
practice)
• The stage as a medium for learning (includes large amounts of practice time, whereby the team will ‘learn by doing’)
• Action learning (supports insight, motivation, skill development, real-world practice and accountability)
Our development programmes reflect learning as a process that is made up of gates, with each individual gate leading into the next one.
