Tropical rainforest: Characteristics of Tropical rainforests
Fig. 1 shows the locations of rainforests around the world.
Eg : Amazon Basin , Congo Basin and parts of S.E.A
Fig. 1
Q1. With the help of Fig.1, describe the climate in which rainforests are found. Name an example
of a rainforest located in South America. (4m)
They are located in regions which experience the tropical equatorial climate
(1).
This climate experiences high rainfall (1) and high temperature (1).
Rainforests are usually found near the Equator. [1] (optional)
An example of this rainforest is the Amazon rainforest[1]
Q2. “Tropical rainforests are made up evergreen trees”. Describe what evergreen trees are. (2m)
Evergreen trees do not shed all their leaves at the same time (1).
They continuously grow new leaves to replace older ones that die
(1).
Q3. State and explain one characteristic of the plants found within the undergrowth layer. (2m)
Plants have much larger leaves (1) to catch more of the sun’s rays (1). OR

Tropical Rainforest Revision 1: Characteristics of Tropical Rainforests
Plants are small, thin and widely-spaced (1) due to lack of sunlight (1)
Q4. With the help of a labelled diagram, label and explain the adaptive features of leaves of trees
in a tropical rainforest. Draw your diagram and write your labels and explanations in the box
below. (6m)
- Drip tips (1m)  to allows water to run off easily and prevents fungi & bacteria
from growing on leaves (1m)
- Broad leaves (1m)  to capture maximum amount of sunlight for photosynthesis
(1m)
- Waxy, leathery, hairy surfaces (1m) to minimise loss of moisture through
transpiration due to high temp (1m)
Q5. With the help of a labelled diagram, label and explain the adaptive features of roots of trees a
tropical rainforest. Draw your diagram and write your labels and explanations in the box below.
(5m)
- Buttress roots (1m)  to support the heavy weight of tall trees (1m)
- Shallow roots (1m)  Need not search for underground water as water is
available throughout the year (tropical climate) (1m) & nutrients (from rapid
decomposition of fallen leaves & branches) are mostly found in the top layer of
the soil (1m)
