1. Build clinometer. See diagram below.
2. Understand how a clinometer works. In the field work, everything you
measure will be standing vertical to the ground. You will hold the straw of
the clinometers to your eye and aim the straw so that you can see the
very top of the object you are measuring (in the picture below it is the
wall), the string line will naturally fall straight down (this is called plumb).
Below is a diagram of how this will work.
A. What do you notice about the relationship between the string line and
the line of the wall?

B. The picture below shows a close up version of the string line,
clinometer, and the line of the wall. What do you notice about the
relationship between angle A and angle B?
C. If angle A measures 30 degrees. Fill in the angle of elevation on the
triangle below.

Trigonometry Field Work Project
Objective: In this project you will be able to take tall objects, (flagpoles.
rooftops, and trees), measure parts of your surroundings and estimate, fairly
close, the height of the object. Through your knowledge of trig functions (sine,
cosine, and tangent), you will be able to calculate these tall objects.
The picture below is a sample of you measuring the top of a building. Your
clinometers will not give you the angle of elevation right away. You must figure
that out.
