• Was born October 25, 1838
• Composed during the ROMANTIC ERA
• Came from a musical background – his father was
a singing teacher and his mother a fine pianist
• At the age of 9 he entered the Paris Conservatory,
where he received notice and awards for his piano
and organ playing, and his outstanding ability to
compose music
• In 1860 he decided to dedicate his composition
career to composing operas
• He only had one successful opera – Carmen
• Carmen took him 2 months to write and it was first
introduced in Paris on March 3, 1875. It was not
well received by its audience
• Within a year of its debut, Carmen was heard all
over Europe and New York, and audiences
LOVED it. It then became popular in Paris, where
it was played 37 times in 1875
• Died on June 3, 1875 on the 23rd performance of
Carmen
• More than 4,000 people attended his funeral
