Media release: Tuesday 14 June 2016:
The international award-winning 2Faced Dance
Company, headed by artistic director and
choreographer Tamsin Fitzgerald and known for its
physically adventurous performances, announces
their next tour RUN, a triple bill of new works by
three female choreographers, in theatres from 7
October to 30 November 2016 (schedule included).
The evening of dance features three brand-new
commissions and will see choreographers Tamsin
Fitzgerald, Lenka Vagnerová and Rebecca Evans
explore human choice and our decision to fight or take flight from the darker side of humanity. With groundbreaking movement and theatre, designs and original musical composition, RUN promises to be an
exhilarating evening of contemporary dance theatre from 2Faced Dance Company.
The RUN tour succeeds two high profile events for the Hereford-based company this year. In January,
2Faced Dance ventured to India for the second research phase of Outlands during a British Council cultural
exchange programme to raise the profile of female choreographers and promote gender equality
internationally. In May, the company’s brainchild and inaugural The BENCH event (as part of International
Dance Festival Birmingham 2016) discussed the issue of gender disparity for female choreographers
working in the UK’s contemporary dance sector.
Speaking about RUN as part of an already exciting year for the company, Tamsin Fitzgerald, artistic
director of 2Faced Dance, said: “RUN marks a pivotal point for the company within both our touring
history and the important work that we are leading on within gender equality. Having launched The BENCH
and following our recent visit to India, we are really starting to see a spark of change surrounding the
barriers faced by female choreographers working within the dance sector.
With a new company of dancers and an exceptional choreographic, design and musical team working on
the creation of the work, RUN will mark one of the most exciting periods within the company’s history and
demonstrates a real commitment to supporting women as artists. Not because we have to but because
they are talented, produce great work and this needs to be shared with people across the globe.”
Lenka Vagnerová, whose work explores the physical capabilities and boundaries of man’s body,
said: "I am very pleased that Tamsin Fitzgerald has asked me to be part of the company’s next triple bill.
As a female choreographer I look forward to working with the company’s all-male group - I think it will be
challenging and rewarding for both parties. I am curious to see how audiences react to an all-female
choreographed bill, and if the choice of topics, movement qualities and theatrical situations are gender
influenced. I have chosen to work on the theme of fallen angels, cast out from heaven for sin and rebellion.
My intention is to find different layers and connections in mythological fallen angels and human beings in
order to explore the choice of good and evil in our lives and life path. Our society is full of fallen angels..."
Rebecca Evans, The BENCH Fellow and in May 2016 awarded the ground-breaking initiative’s first
commission to produce work as part of RUN, said: “I am thrilled to receive this commission to work with
2Faced Dance. It is an honour to have my work shown alongside Tamsin and Lenka, two established
choreographers. This opportunity to further develop my ideas would not have been possible without The
BENCH, a programme of support for female choreographers of which I was one of the first Fellows. I can’t
wait to get into the studio and create the first The BENCH commission!”
For the RUN tour, five outstanding dancers will bring the choreographers’ works to life. Familiar to 2Faced
Dance audiences are Jack Humphrey, Jason Boyle and Ed Warner. They are joined by company
newcomers Louis Parker-Evans and Kai Tomioka.
Lighting design for RUN is by James Mackenzie (credits include Out of His Skin, In The Dust and Dreaming
In Code – 2Faced Dance Company, Cut It Out – Young Vic and Steam – Royal Festival Hall) and original
music scores will be composed by Angus MacRae (credits include Lucid Grounds, Dreaming In Code –
2Faced Dance Company) and Tomáš Vychytil.
2Faced Dance Company offers an extensive programme of education and outreach work tailored to suit all
their touring activity. The company will work with schools, colleges and dance companies all over the UK on
a range of workshops and performances to complement the RUN tour.
2Faced Dance is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation and RUN is supported by Arts
Council England, PRS for Music Foundation, DanceEast, Theatr Brycheiniog and The Courtyard, Hereford.
