Lesson 3
VOCAB:
Strata: layers of rock
Stratification: the process in which sedimentary rocks are arranged in
layers
5 steps of how sedimentary rocks are formed:
1. Weathering: breaking down rock material into smaller pieces
2. Erosion: moving rock material and sediment from one location to
another (wind, water, ice, gravity)
3. Deposition: sediment collecting low lying areas or at the bottom
of bodies of water
4. Compaction/cementation: sediment that is under pressure and
over time, hardens
5. Formation of sedimentary rock
3 specific facts about sedimentary rock (unique to ONLY sedimentary
rock)
1. These rocks form at or near the surface without heat or pressure.
2. In these types of rocks-layers are usually present
a. Layers called “strata”
3. Fossils are usually found in these rocks.
3 Classifications or groups of sedimentary rocks:
1. CLASTIC: fragments of smaller rocks cemented together
2. CHEMICAL: formed after a liquid evaporates (crystals are usually
left behind)
3. ORGANIC: remains of one living organisms (examples include coal
& coral reefs)
