Low Fiber Diet to High Fiber Diet
For some health problems, such as diverticulitis, you may be advised to adopt a low fiber diet. A low fiber intake is usually intended for a short
duration only. You should progress to a high fiber diet within a few days or weeks. Slowly increasing your intake of fiber will help your digestive tract
adjust to the change. This gradual addition of high fiber food to the diet is particularly important. Rapid increases could lead to bloating and gaseous
discomfort.
Fiber Restricted diet
2-5 grams fiber per day
Transition Phase
5-15 grams of fiber per day
Include two servings of fruit per day, such as
½ cup of canned fruit, juice without pulp or ripe
bananas. Most raw and dried fruits should be
avoided.
Add one to two servings of fresh fruit
(peeled) per day, such as peaches, pears, apples,
etc.
Include two servings per day (1/2 cup) of
cooked, peeled and seedless vegetables such as
asparagus tips, beets, green beans, tomatoes,
spinach, winter squash, eggplant or potatoes.
Add one to two servings per day of any type of
vegetables.
Include one to two servings of whole grain
bread or cereals per day.

or protein foods. (1oz.of meat, poultry or fish or
1 egg or 2 tbsp. peanut butter).
Include at least two servings of milk or dairy
products per day as tolerated. (1 cup milk or
yogurt or 1 ½ oz. cheese).
Continue to drink at least 6- 8 glasses of
water or other liquids (non-caffeinated,
nonalcoholic) each day.
Avoid foods not well tolerated. If you use
unprocessed wheat bran when following a high
fiber diet, start with 1 teaspoon per meal and
gradually increase to 2-4 tablespoon per day.
