Measuring Apical Pulse
Performance Objective: Measure apical pulse
Equipment and Supplies: Watch with a second hand, stethoscope and antiseptic wipe.
Standards: Complete this skill set to 100% in 5 minutes
Evaluation Check List
 Check in the small box on the left when completed.
Sanitize hands.
Greet patient and introduce self.
Identify patient and explain the procedure.
Observe the patient for any signs that may affect the pulse or the respirations.
Assemble equipment.
Rotate the chest piece to the bell position.
Clean ear pieces and chest piece with an antiseptic wipe.
Position patient.
Ask patient to unbutton or remove his or her shirt.
Warm the chest piece of the stethoscope.
Insert the earpieces into ears in a forward position.
Explain why the ear pieces must be directed forward.
Place the chest piece over the apex of the heart.
Describe the location of the apex of the heart.
Count the number of heart beats for 30 seconds and multiple by two.
Sanitize hands.
Record in the patient chart correctly.
