Aphrodite is the goddess of love and
beauty. In the Iliad she is said to be the
daughter of Zeus and Dione, but in later
poems she was born from the foam of the
sea near Cythera, and then floated towards
Cyprus. These lands are sacred to her, and
she was often called Cytherea or the
Cyprian. Her name means “the foam-risen”,
from aphros, which is the Greek word for
foam.
Aphrodite is the laughter-loving
goddess. According to Greeks there is no
joy or loveliness without her. Beauty goes
with her; storms and winds take flight before
her, sweet flowers grow where she walks,
and she moves in a bright light.
However this goddess has an
unattractive side to her. She is usually shown
as malicious; Aphrodite holds a deadly and
destructive power over men and gods. She
was married to Hephaestus until he divorced
her because of her long-term affair with
Ares. Aphrodite had a very short affairs with
the gods; Dionysus, Hermes, Nerites,
Poseidon, and Zeus. She also had affairs with
the mortals; Adonis, Ankhises, Boutes,
Phaon, and Phaethon.
Aphrodite’s character tells us that the
Greeks valued beauty and __ love. The
Greeks culture had arranged marriages and
it seems like cheating/affairs were common.
They didn’t exactly approve of the affairs
but the Greeks felt as if they couldn’t stop
them either. The affairs were part of
Aphrodite and the Greeks felt as if they
shouldn’t change that.

they are considered extremely beautiful
