Diaphragm
Respiratory System
Function: GAS EXCHANGE
Allows organism to obtain OXYGEN and
remove CARBON DIOXIDE & WATER
The Pathway of Air
To begin, outside air passes through:
Nasal passage:
passage lined with MUCUS and CILIA
(hairs)
Function:
Function FILTERS, MOISTENS, WARMS the air
What is the purpose of filtering, moistening
and warming the air?
The Pathway of Air Cont’d
Pharynx: (throat)
TRACHEA (windpipe): lined with CILIA
and MUCUS, it’s supported by rings of
CARTILAGE
Watch Cilia Sweep particles away!!
Feel your trachea, run your fingers down the front
of your neck!! (bumps are rings of cartilage)
The Pathway of Air Cont’d
After the TRACHEA into the:
BRONCHI (2): directs air into the lungs
Branch out (get smaller and smaller) like the
branches on a tree!! **called bronchioles**
LUNGS (2): main organ of respiratory system
The Pathway of Air Cont’d
At the end of the bronchi:
ALVEOLI: little “grape-like clusters” that
perform GAS EXCHANGE.
•Oxygen in alveoli diffuses into capillaries
•Carbon Dioxide diffuses from capillaries
into alveoli
