: Effect of Dietary Supplementation with Different Levels of
Arginine on Some Blood Traits of Laying Hens

: immunology, physiology ,biochemistry, animal
feeding
: to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation with different levels
of arginine which have been above the levels recommended by NRC
(National Research Council) on certain blood characteristics of laying
hens.
:
Provide the right supplement in animal feed is very important for the livestock
industry,no exception in the poultry industry, especially laying hens. By providing
appropriate supplement ,the results of the poultry industry will be more satisfying.
immunity is also one of the most important aspects in the poultry industry, because
with good immunity, poultry will be more resistant to disease, so the cost for the treatment of
disease can be reduced. One way of providing immunity in poultry is to add in poultry feed as
a supplement. One amino acid, arginine is shown to increase immunity in laying hens in
accordance with the results of research.
Arginine is very important amino acid, it play important role in cell division and
healing of wounds and immune effectiveness and hormones secretion. Snyder et al. (1956)
and Wietlake et al. (1954) reported that arginine is not synthesized by the birds'liver, but it
should add to the feed.
This experiments were conducted to evaluate the results of the NRC research on the
use of arginine limits on poultry feed.To identify the effect of arginine levels in poultry feed
to immunity,in this experiments use the Blood traits measured, consist of :
a. Hemoglobin concentration (Hb)
b. Total red blood cells count
c. Packed Cells Volume (PCV)
d. Total White Blood Cells Count (WBC)
e. Calculation of MCV, MCH, McHC: MCV, MCH, MCHC
The results of the effect of adding different levels of L-Arginine to the diet of laying
hens on the RBC,PCV, Hb, MCV, MCH and MCHC. There was no significant difference
between hens that give feed with excess arginine supplement compared with levels of arginine in
accordance with the NRC.Even higher levels of arginine, also increasing the Hens body's immune
better.
Conclusion :
Adding arginine to hens’s diet at levels higher than that recommended by NRC have no
negative effect on physiological performance of these poultry. However, supplementary
arginine caused significant enhancement in immune response and resistance.
