STELLAR FORMATION
Objective: I will illustrate the steps in the
formation of a star.
PAGE 27
What is a star?
• A large object made of gases that gives off
light and heat
What is a star?
• Made of mostly Hydrogen (H) gas
Formation of a Star
• nebula- cloud of gas and dust from
which stars form
Formation of a Star
• gravity causes the nebula to contract
• as more matter is pulled together,
gravity increases
Formation of a Star
• the nebula begins to spin and flatten
into a disk
Formation of a Star
• protostar (pre-star)- central
concentration of matter in the middle of
the spinning nebula
Formation of a Star
• as gravity increases, temperature and
pressure build
• eventually, nuclear fusion occurs
• a new star is born!
Left Side Output Activity Page 26
• Use the diagram on page 436 in the
Purple Textbook and your notes to
complete the following:
• Diagram the steps in the formation of a
star
• Label each step with a brief description
