Factors affecting population density in China and the UK LO: To explain and compare the human and physical factors that have an impact of the 2 countries Recap… what human and physical factors affect population density? Facts and figures UK and China CHINA POPULATION SIZE LAND AREA POPULATION DENSITY SIZE OF MOST POPULATED CITY NUMBER OF MEGA CITIES HEIGHT OF HIGHEST MOUNTAIN PEAK % OF LAND AREA OCCUPIED BY DESERT MOST POPULATED REGION UK China and the UK answers CHINA UK POPULATION SIZE 1,3 BILLION 64 MILLION LAND AREA 9,706,961 sq km 243,610 sq km POPULATION DENSITY 140 km2 255 km2 SIZE OF MOST 24 MILLION POPULATED CITY NUMBER OF MEGA CITIES 5 8 MILLION HEIGHT OF HIGHEST MOUNTAIN PEAK 8,848 M 1.344 M % OF LAND AREA OCCUPIED BY DESERT 20% 0% MOST POPULATED REGION EAST SOUTH-EAST 0 We’ll start with the UK So let’s play – do you know your UK Geography?! Practice exam questions 1. Describe the population density of China (4) Say the pattern Use figures Use direction (mention specific areas) 2. Describe the population density of the UK (4) Here is an answer for China • China’s population is concentrated in the east of the country; densities everywhere in the east are greater than 25 persons per km2 and in places exceed 1000 people per km2. • There is a very sparsely populated belt to the west of China, where densities are less than 5 people per km2. • To the north-west there is another belt where populations are between 25-250 people per km2. Now you do the same for the UK UK • The most sparsely populated areas of the UK are the highlands of Scotland and the uplands of N. Ireland, Wales and northern England, these areas typically have less than 99 people per km2. • The two regions that are the most densely populated are the south-east of England and the north-west of England, here populations are between 350-600+ people per km2. • There are also small concentrations of high population in central Scotland and in the north-east of England. Annotated maps Low Population density of less than 10 per sq km in Gobi Desert. Excellent communications inculding a number of major international airports (e.g. Heathrow) and a major rail hub (Kings Cross) as well as major motor ways (M25) has helped attract business and commerce and London has a fast growing economy with a large range of jobs. The fact that London is the capital city has also given high status for many businesses to locate here. Its history and heritage with major tourist attractions has meant that there are many jobs in the tertiary sector in particular in tourism. In areas such as the Highlands of Scotland, where most jobs are in primary industries and there is an overall lack of employment there are much fewer people. The isolation of this area, with poor communications and lack of T, phone and Internet reception also accounts for the low population density.
