How to Find ALL Factors of a Given Number
Whenever two or more numbers are multiplied to give a product, each of the
numbers that were multiplied are called factors. For example 3 x 4 = 12, 12 is the
product and 3 and 4 are called factors. 5 is not a factor or 12 because nothing
multiplied by 5 will equal 12.
To find all factors of a number, ask yourself: Is 1 a factor of the number?
Is 2 a factor? Is 3 a factor? Continue with larger number.
Example
Find all the factors of 18.
Is __ a factor of 18?
Is 1 a factor of 18?
Is 2 a factor of 18?
Is 3 a factor of 18?
Is 4 a factor of 18?
Is 5 a factor of 18?

Number Sentence
1 x 18
2x9
3x6
4 x nothing = 18
5 x nothing = 18
Factor Pair
1, 18
2, 9
3, 6
You do not have to go any further because the next question you would ask yourself
is: Is 6 a factor of 18, but you have already identified that 6 is a factor of 18. Any
other factor greater than 6 would already have been paired with a factor less than 6,
which tells you that you have identified all factors of 18.
The factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 18.
Any easy way to check if each factor has a factor pair is to draw factor rainbows like
so…
1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18
