1. Do you think it is ethical for Scott’s or other companies to fire employees who smoke,
even if they only smoke outside of work?
Speaking from the position of an X-smoker, I am in agreement with the labor attorney
who thinks it is "dangerous" to allow this invasion in the worker's personal lives. The
employees are paid for an eight hour shift and the job is over. If the corporation would be
willing to pay a couple bucks an hour for there off duty cooperation I could agree that it
is ethical.
2. In implementing Scott’s health initiatives, does Hagedorn put the interests of one
group of stakeholders above those of another?
Yes, the customers, if the company chooses will receive the companies product's at a
cheaper price. I'm not sure if the community would benefit because they do not have to
allocate any monies in that direction. Suppliers and distributor could benefit from the
companies action. Stockholder could benefit if the saving in health insurance premiums
are passed along to stockholder in the form of dividends.
I think, that they should pass the additional health care cost on to the employee that
smokes.
3. Evaluate the ethics of Scott’s decision using each of the four ethical decision models
we discussed in chapter 4.
a. Utilitarian
The greatest number of good is already shown 70% percent do not smoke. I would only
encourage the other 30% to quit. I wonder if 100% compliance is a realist goal.
b. Moral Rights
The decision to force employees to quit smoking would be protected by Moral Rights
because it protects the individual rights. The company employee said that the company
was giving you a choice. I disagree, what I see is quite immediately or quit later or you
lose your job.
c. Justice Rule
Under the Justice Rule I believe that it is not fair or equitable. It is fair for no one to
smoke at work, but unfair to control their live away from work. Equitable, the other 70%
percent are not receiving any additional benefit for not smoking. So if you are going to
spend an additional 500 dollars to help someone quit smoking give the other group 500
dollars for being non-smokers.
d. Practical Rule
Under this rule the company would pass all three tests.
