APPOSITIVE PHRASES
DEFINITION: An APPOSITIVE is a noun or a pronoun which usually follows another noun or pronoun and
RESTATES it to help identify or explain it. When the appositive has modifiers, it is called an APPOSITIVE
PHRASE.
EXAMPLE: Jimmy, a star athlete, will surely get a scholarship to college.
“a star athlete” restates who Jimmy is. It is an appositive phrase.
Occasionally, the appositive or appositive phrase comes in front of the noun being restated.
EXAMPLE: A man of integrity, Mr. Aldritch never cheats anyone.
