Hints: All atoms in their elemental state are neutral Atomic # = the # p+ in that atom Atoms may contain any or all of the following subatomic particles: protons, neutrons and electrons o protons = +1 charge, weigh 1 atomic mass unit (amu) o electrons = –1 charge, negligible mass o neutrons = no charge, weigh 1amu Protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus Electrons are found in the energy levels surrounding the nucleus and are packaged as pairs in orbitals. o e–‘s fill the lowest numbered energy levels first. One e– is added to each orbital in an energy level before e–‘s are paired in an energy level. Once an energy level contains the maximum number of electrons, any subsequent electrons will be added to the next energy level. Atomic Structure Model Kit Parts RED POM = proton (p+) WHITE POM = neutron (no) BLACK POM = electron (e–) Atomic Structure Outline *Using the poms and atomic structure models provided, complete the models for the atoms listed and fill in the tables with necessary information. Part 1: Atomic Structure 1. Construct a model for the FIRST 10 atoms – one a time. Draw a cartoon image of the atom on a notecard. Be sure to label the subatomic particles, nucleus, and energy levels. Then write the electron configuration (see poster for how to record these). SAMPLE ELEMENT NOTECARD: ELEMENT NAME: ELECTRON CONFIGURATION: # p+ # no # e– Atomic # Atomic Mass 2. What is similar between the atomic structures of the atoms in 1–3? 3. What is different in the atomic structures of atoms 1-3? 4. How do the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons relate to (if at all) atomic # and atomic mass? 5. Use the following information to make notecards for these 17 atoms: # p+ # no # e– Atomic # 5 11 amu 20 16 20 16 6 12 amu 7 14 amu 19 9 19 31 amu 4 8 9 amu 8 11 23 amu 18 40 amu 13 27 amu 10 18 12 39 amu 10 15 10 Atomic Mass 17 12 14 28 amu
