A is for Aortic Arch:
Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood from the heart.
Arteries are part of the circulatory system (that carries the
blood to the various parts of the body). The heart is the
pump that pushes the blood out through the arteries to tiny
blood vessels called capillaries (that carry the blood to the
cells). The blood is carried back to the heart by the veins.
An important structure in all creatures with a backbone
(Vertebrates) is the “ventral aorta.” The ventral aorta is the
main artery carrying the blood from the heart to the gills of
fish. The ventral aorta gives off paired branches called
aortic arches that pass around the “pharyngeal pouches”
that develop into gills in fish.
After passing through these aortic arches, the blood flows
into the dorsal aorta (the main artery carrying blood to the
tail end of the animal). In
