(click on this link, Key Terms for definitions of unfamiliar terms) The lower leg is formed by the tibia and fibula which articulate distally with the talus of the foot to form the ankle. Ankle injuries account for 20-25% of all injuries in athletics that require time lost from competition or practice. Most injuries to the ankle involve the lateral ligaments which are made up of the posterior talofibular, anterior talofibular, and calcaneofibular ligaments. Ankle sprains less commonly seen involve the medial “deltoid” ankle ligaments made up of the anterior tibiotalar, tibionavicular, tibiocalcaneal, and posterior tibiotalar ligaments. The calf is two muscles, the gastrocnemius and soleus. These muscles act to plantarflex the ankle and promote balance. They are also subject to strain and can play a part in the development of Achilles tendonitis. (1) Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3
