Mechanical Processing
• Mechanical processing
occurs in the oral cavity
through the action of
teeth and tongue
changing food to the
bolus that enters the
pharynx
• Some processing
continues in the
muscular stomach
Secretion and Digestion
• Digestive enzymes
that breakdown the
four classes of
organic molecules
are secreted into the
mouth, stomach,
and small intestine
where they act on
those molecules
Organic Acquisition
• The process of
organic acquisition
occurs in the small
intestine
• Water absorption
occurs mainly in the
large intestine
