AAG UNIT 8 Part 1 - Trigonometry and SOH CAH TOA
Things to remember about right triangles and notation:





Uppercase letters are used to label the vertices.
Lowercase letters are used to label the sides.
The sides are given the same letter as the vertex
they are opposite from.
All of the sides of a right triangle are segments.
The sides of a right triangle are described based
upon their location to a particular vertex: Opposite
an angle, Adjacent to an angle, or the Hypotenuse.

SOH CAH TOA is an acronym used to remember the
three basic Trigonometric Ratios. The three basic
‘Trig Ratios’ are named Sine, Cosine, and Tangent.
As seen at the right, the reference angle is label as 𝜃
which is the Greek letter ‘THETA’. ‘Sine’ is the name
of the relationship that compares the opposite leg of
a right triangle to the hypotenuse of a right triangle
in relationship to the reference angle 𝜃. ‘Cosine’ is
the name of the relationship that compares the
adjacent leg of a right triangle to the hypotenuse in
relationship to the reference angle 𝜃. ‘Tangent’ is
the name of the relationship that compares the
opposite leg to the adjacent leg in a right triangle
in relationship to the reference angle
𝜃.

HOMEWORK PROBLEMS USING THE THREE TRIGONOMETRIC RATIOS (SOH CAH TOA)
For all questions below, write each Trigonometric Ratio as a Simplified Fraction.
For the questions below, find the values of each Trigonometric Ratio in decimal form. Round your
answers to the nearest hundredth when necessary.
